BPW Geelong - My Palestine: a personal journey
Dr June Kane first visited Palestine in 1970 with a pack on her back and “Israel on $10 a day” in her pocket.
In the 1980s she went to live in a small town in Jordan and visited Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories regularly. She was based in the Gaza Strip with the UN in 1997-8 and each year goes back to the region on behalf of the UN Democracy Fund.
For more than 40 years, she's been fascinated by this troubled region: its history, politics, cultures and the myriad stories that have been and continue to grow around it and from it.
Many years ago, also, she began to learn about and collect Palestinian dresses, the magnificent embroidered robes that themselves tell stories about the women who not only wear them but sew them by hand.
BPW Geelong is honoured that June will share with us some thoughts on her most recent visit to Jerusalem and the West Bank of Palestine. She will present her collection of dresses and explain the stories behind the embroidery.
The evening will also feature our annual Mentee Graduation Ceremony.
