Infrastructure & Key Assets
Location and access for any business is crucial.
Geelong is strategically placed at the hub of a well developed transport network offering, options by road, rail, sea and air transport.
Geelong’s easy access to Melbourne’s central business district, industrial west, international airport and shipping container facilities at the port of Melbourne, make it easier and more efficient to do business.
The six lane Princes Freeway provides fast, efficient links between Geelong and Melbourne and beyond. The 75km journey takes about an hour. The Geelong Ring Road provides fast and efficient north – south access around Geelong.
Geelong’s extensive suburban road network connects business and industrial precincts to arterial roads, major highways, Avalon airport, rail freight yards and the Port of Geelong.
Port of Geelong
The Port of Geelong is Victoria’s second busiest handling over 15m tonnes of cargo each year. Geelong Port is a bulk handling facility, providing a range of berths for loading of liquids and gases, general dry bulk cargo such as woodchips and bulk grain and a dedicated facility for aluminium at Point Henry. Corio Bay provides a draft of 12.3m to accommodate a range of shipping purposes.
Geelong position in south eastern Australia makes it an ideal location for sourcing raw materials from interstate and international markets.
Avalon Airport offers 1,840 hectares of land for aerospace related activities only 20 minutes from Geelong and 40 minutes from Melbourne.
The airport offers curfew free freight movements, a 3,048m runway capable of handling the largest aircraft and associated infrastructure.
The Airport is currently used by a number of specialist freight operations and is favoured for its location, ease of access and capacity – being able to accommodate up to 100 tonnes per movement. The most notable freight operations at Avalon include the Melbourne Formula 1 Grand Prix, V8 Supercars and Superbikes. Avalon possesses international airport status, including ‘first port of entry’ rights for handling freight.
Geelong is a major rail freight hub for south west Victoria efficiently distributing goods from within Victoria and interstate. The national Standard Gauge rail network passes through Geelong enabling easy access to the rest of Australia.
